Home Education at RLLM 2026

We're so excited to launch our new Home Education Sessions here at the Rural Life Living Museum.

Thanks to funding from the Community Foundation for Surrey we've been able to hire Laura who has been part of the Home Education community herself for 18 years. 

Sessions are aimed at children between 5 - 12 years old but we are not strict on ages. Each workshop will be different - but hands on learning, time travelling, and fun outside in our museum grounds is guaranteed!

2026 Dates:

3rd September - Harvest Time
Step back in time to discover how families harvested, stored and preserved food to make it through the winter, from Victorian households to the WW2 “Dig for Victory” campaign. Get hands-on with the food, tools and traditions that helped keep families fed.  

17th September - Autumn and Traditional skills
Explore the changing autumn landscape and discover how people have used the natural world for hundreds of years. Through seasonal exploration and hands-on crafts, we'll investigate leaves, seeds, plants and traditional ways of making useful things from nature.  

1st October - Woodland Creatures
Explore the fascinating ways British wildlife prepares for winter and discover how people in the past learned about the natural world. Through outdoor exploration and hands-on activities, we'll investigate animals, habitats and seasonal change.  

15th October - Victorian Halloween
Step back into Victorian times to discover the traditions, stories and superstitions behind Halloween. We'll explore old-fashioned celebrations through storytelling, nature, crafts and hands-on activities.  

5th November - Bonfire Night
Travel back in time to discover the story behind Bonfire Night and how it became a tradition of fire, lanterns and celebration. We'll explore the history while investigating the science and creativity behind fire and fireworks.  

19th November - Light in the Darkness
Discover what life was like before electric lights and how people coped with darkness during WW2. Explore light, shadows and traditional ways of creating light through hands-on challenges and crafts.

3rd December - Victorian Christmas
Step into a Victorian Christmas and discover how some of our favourite Christmas traditions began. Through stories, crafts and hands-on activities, we'll explore how families celebrated before our modern Christmas.  

Timings: 10:00am - 12:00pm

Spaces are limited to 15 children per session.

Sibling discounts are available and will be automatically applied at checkout. One child ticket will be charged at full price, and each additional sibling will receive £3.50 off, up to a maximum of three extra children per order. One adult per paying child goes free. Under 4s go free. 

These workshops are not included in our Annual Pass offer. Home Education tickets are only valid for the duration of the session, if you wish to stay later, please consider buying an Annual Pass or purchase a day ticket from Reception. Thank you.
